Gigi Proietti created the Globe Theatre four years ago during the centenary celebrations of the Villa Borghese park (the theatre is located in). Under Proietti’s art direction thsi summertime venue has gone from strength to strength. This year’s performances, as always, see Shakespeare as the undisputed protagonist. The circular structure of this theatre, modelled on the original Globe theatre in London and made entirely out of wood, is the perfect location to re-enact this masterful British playwright’s work. h21

From 14 to 23 Sep: Festa d'Africa (Africa festival) www
The sixth edition of an event that promotes sub-Saharan theatre in the full knowledge that cultural exchange lies at the basis of the creation of peaceful relations between peoples. The central theme this year is the city of Algiers, the Capital of Arab Culture in 2007, and the programme includes the screening of the films BaraKat and Making Off and a discussion with Gerard Parquet, Kossi Efoui and Koffi Kwahulè. Look out also for an electrifying live performance by Senegalese singer Julia Sarr, accompanied by flamenco guitarist Patrice La Rose.
