"Play to win, but if you can't win then try to win with all your strength": this is the motto cherished by the 1,350 athletes from 57 European and Asian countries taking part in these Youth Games. These young people (aged 12-21) suffering from various intellectual disabilities will compete in several disciplines: athletics, swimming, basketball, football, gymnastics, bowling, boules. The first edition of this great event also includes a campaign called 'Adopt a champion' in which those who wish to can pay a fee to cover the expenses of the youngsters' stay in Rome and their participation in the Games. Three per cent of the world population is intellectually disabled. They represent a resource that the "European Youth Games" intends to exploit and present to the world.

Until 8 Oct: Settimana per il basket (Basketball Week)
A whole week dedicated entirely to basketball and aimed at promoting the sport in the capital. A basketball village will be erected at the Baths of Caracalla where the public will be able to play, watch University Basketball League matches, and take part in promotional events. The focal point of this event will be the match played between the Phoenix Sun and Virtus Roma teams on October 6.
