One of the most captivating and glamorous show-jumping events in the world takes place in the legendary setting of the Piazza di Siena in Villa Borghese. The event was created by Marcantonio Borghese, whose aim was to recreate the atmosphere of the medieval palios in his own grounds and park. During the four-day event the strength contest is the competition most loved by the Roman public and the Gran Premio Roma is the absolute highlight. Sport and tradition is combined in this one great event.

20 May: Race for the Cure
Race for the Cure is an event dedicated to breast cancer and raising greater awareness about an illness that affects over 30,000 women a year in Italy but that can be tackled and, in many cases, cured. But this day is not just about information, it's also about having fun. There's a 5km mini-marathon and a 2km walk, stands and food in the marathon village, and the participation of entertainment personalities. This year's celebrity patron is actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta. The proceeds of the event go towards funding breast cancer research. €10 www

This event is an aquatic camping experience that offers lots to do for both sports and nature lovers. Participants go down the river in a canoe and pass by famous Italian art cities where they can stop and visit the towns themselves as well as some extremely evocative archaeological sites. The event is made up of different stopovers (where welcome events and parties are held by the municipalities concerned) and is a way to enjoy the nature and landscapes of Città di Castello, Sant'Angelo di Celle and Fratta Todina.
