From 6 to 21 May: Telecom Italia Masters
The major stars of the international tennis scene have come to Rome's Foro Italico since 1935 to play in the Rome Open, now known as the Telecom Italia Masters. This is the 76th edition of this major sporting event on clay that is becoming increasingly popular every year.

21 May: Komen Roma Race for the cure. Di corsa contro i tumori del seno (Komen Rome Race for the Cure. Running against breast cancer) www
The "Race for the Cure" is a 5km marathon or a 2km walk aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and funds for research. Numerous sponsors will be present in the marathon village, and there will be music, aerobics, a games area for children and a competition for the most "fun" group of runners. Entrants will automatically be enrolled for various prizes, one of which is a plane ticket to the United States. h10. Registration fee: ?10 for adults; ?6 for children

One of the most captivating and glamorous show-jumping events in the world takes place in the legendary setting of the Piazza di Siena in Villa Borghese. The event was created by Marcantonio Borghese, whose aim was to recreate the atmosphere of the medieval palios in his own grounds and park. During the four-day event the strength contest is the competition most loved by the Roman public and the Gran Premio Roma is the absolute highlight. Sport and tradition is combined in this one great event.

Until 1 May: XXVII Discesa Internazionale del Tevere (27th International Descent of the Tiber)
This event is an aquatic camping experience that offers lots to do for both sports and nature lovers. Participants go down the river in a canoe and pass by famous Italian art cities where they can stop and visit the towns themselves as well as some extremely evocative archaeological sites. Overnight accommodation is in camper vans or local gym halls. www
