18 Mar: Maratona di Roma (The Rome Marathon) www
One of the city's most atmospheric sporting events is its annual Marathon during which the city centre is transformed into a no-traffic zone and animated with concerts and performances that celebrate this festival of sport. Registrations have risen exponentially since last year and 12,000 athletes from over 70 countries, many of them disabled, will take part in the 2007 event. As well as the marathon there will be the traditional "Fun Run" (a non-competitive event open to all). Food stalls, toilets, shuttle services, police services and first aid points will also be available so that everyone can enjoy themselves in total peace of mind.

The most important and well-known rugby tournament in Europe will take place in Rome's Flaminio stadium. The Italy, England, Scotland, Ireland, France and Wales teams will all play. Rugby is an energetic sport that highlights the physical impact between opponents but which is always played in the utmost respect of rules that hark back to the noble origins of this discipline.

Until 13 May: Campionato di basket (Basketball championships)
The Palalottomatica venue in Rome will light up with the fervour of great basketball, one of the most popular sports on the Italian peninsula. The Italian teams, and in particular Rome's Virtus Roma team, will be contending for the Top Division Tim Trophy.
