From 3 Oct to 17 Feb 2008: In scaena. Il teatro di Roma antica (In scaena. (The theatre of ancient Rome)
This fascinating archaeological exhibition tells the story of an essential component of Roman culture: the theatre. The exhibition opens with about 70 works that explore the complex origins of theatre: its Greek and Italic roots, the Etruscan contribution to its evolution, the performances that evolved out of Magna Grecia. Another section is centred on the structure of theatres and on set design, both aspects that, with time, evolved their own style. The last part of the exhibition is extremely effective and composed of an overview of the protagonists of the theatrical experience: the actors –their miming techniques and dramatic abilities – and the public, passionate about this form of art made up of music, dance, singing and acting... Until 27 Oct h8,30-18,30; from 28 Oct to 15 Feb 2008 h8,30-16,30; 16 and 17 Feb 2008 h8,30-17. €11, reduced €6,50

From 5 Oct to 3 Feb 2008: Paul Gauguin. Artista di mito e sogno (Paul Gauguin. Artist of myths and dreams)
Paul Gauguin was a symbolist deeply struck by the work of Cézanne and Pissarro and was obsessed by the idea of pure and untamed painting and by a quest to merge both art and life. Paul Gauguin was rejected by France and considered subversive, he spoke using colour, clear contours and rarefied atmospheres. He allowed his primitive and mythical characters to inhabit a literary Eden, possibly in a quest to locate the Peru of his infancy... Paul Gauguin will sate our hunger for beauty. Venue: the Vittoriano museum.

Rothko was Russian by birth but American by adoption and maintained himself through teaching until the critics and art world took notice of him. This retrospective celebrates Rothko's ability to draw out emotional strength through the universal language of colour. The curator of the show is Oliver Wick. A cura di Oliver Wick. From 26 Oct al 27 Jan 2008: Pop Art! 1956 - 1968
Walter Guadagnini is the curator of the biggest exhibition to date dedicated to Pop Art, a cultural and artistic movement that represented the West through unforgettable images such as the Marilyn silk-screens by Andy Warhol and the Coca Cola logo. The show is divided into four sections: the first is dedicated to the object as merchandise, its essence rendered and summarised in the logo; the second section focuses on the stars and personalities of the time, such as astronauts Joe Tilson and Derek Boshier; the third section is dedicated to communication channels and forms of expression of popular culture such as the cartoon; the fourth is about sex and the body as an erotic entity. Pop art is art that collides – inevitably – with mass media; it offers a document of society and of the spirit that pervaded the era.

Until 7 Oct: Ubique Vacuum: racconti dalla città. Mario Ferrante - Dipinti 2005-2006 (Ubique Vacuum: tales of the city. Mario Ferrante - Paintings 2005-2006)
After having been displayed at the Maschio Angioino monument, the 36 creations by Ferrante arrive in Rome. Their next stop will be the Poldi Pezzoli museum in Milan. The works on show were inspired by the different nocturnal meeting points of the city and the people who inhabit this world, who though different from one another are united by a similar existential unease. Ferrante is interested in the "bit generation", a generation brought up on internet that is trying to live in a dimension that he considers to be vacuous and empty. From Trastevere to Testaccio, not forgetting the centre of the city, we are let into the mysteries of the capital's nocturnal hours through a series of etchings, colour and suffused lighting, that allude, delicately... tue-sun h10-19. These four stills are part of the "Collectors’ images" series and are taken from Cremaster 3, a famous film set in 30s New York that centres on the Masonic movement. The images reproduce the famous scene of the "race of the dead horses", symbolic of the eternal struggle between life and death. Barney’s dream-like, sexual language is impregnated with refined symbols and speaks to us of the anthropological developments in the real (but at the same time unreal or hyper-real) world. Until 10 Oct: Vedovamazzei. Raphael The Western
This show is part of the Dieci Grandi Mostre (Ten major exhibitions) project inaugurated in 2006. The joint talents of Maristella Scala and Simeone Crispino bring together drawings, neon and ceramics. This exhibition – dedicated to the great artist Raphael and conceptually aligned with the previous one – finds its meaning and direction in the idea of patronage as the Cardinal Scipione Borghese understood it, that is to say, the profound desire to possess the art of one’s own time. The works on display represent the storyboard of a hypothetical film in which a group of white men travel to the West. Tue-sun h9-19. €10,50

Until 4 Nov: Abu Ghraib. Abuso di potere. Opere su carta di Susan Crile
Susan Crile's canvases say a lot more than the myriad words and explanations expounded about the torture inflicted by US soldiers on Iraqi prisoners. The artist is faithful to the reportage style of the photos that made their way around the world. But then she subverts it. Crile begins with simple representation but then reaches incredible heights by managing to confer humanity on episodes that are devoid of humanity; episodes that are beastly and mind-boggling. Delicately drawn white chalk marks bring to life the intimate and personal pain of the hell that was Abu Ghraib. Tue-sun h10-20. Museum + exhibition: €5,50, reduced €4 www

Three artists with very different backgrounds and sensibilities, Mochetti, Pistoletto and Sandison are nevertheless united by their choice to create works using electrical or technological equipment. Maurizio Mochetti presents “Sfera Avional”, an installation in continuous movement conceived to depict a fluid idea of space. Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the most emblematic artists of the Arte Povera movement, shows “Quadro di fili elettrici”: a triumph of minimalism composed of electric wires and lightbulbs. The third piece, "Collapse-Construct", is by Scotsman Charles Sandison and consists of anthropomorphised numbers organised in complex systems that generate ever-differing orders. Tue-sun h11-19

Photos, music scores and information panels tell the story of the people who, from the 1950s to today, determined the style and musical choices of Italian theatre, inhabited by musicians such as Nicola Piovani and Daniele Sepe. The exhibition is an entirely audio event: the exhibition is made up of nine different musical programmes (the soundtrack is a selection of tracks by the artists represented). Another gem of the "Sipario Sonoro" event are the i-pods placed at the disposal of the public, who can use them for up to 360 minutes as they walk around in the beautiful setting of Doria Pamphilj park. h10-17. The title of this show is inspired by an early 20th century work by Umberto Boccioni, one of the most important exponents of Futurism. Contemplation and thought were turned into something concrete: futurism is where art finds expression. Established artists are included in the exhibition - Pedro Cabrita Reis, Patrick Tuttofuoco, Anish Kapoor, Tobias Rehberger with Olafur Eliasson – but also up-and-coming artists. His 29 years were intensely lived and filled with art: Gino Bonichi was born in Macerata but chose to live and work in Rome, a choice that was sealed by his decision to be known as Scipione. Refined painter, fascinated by Goya, he left a profound mark in modern figurative art. His works speak of Rome, the church, decadence and of allegorical figures such as Cain or the blond mermaid. Apertura del Cortile del Tempio (The temple courtyard opens to the public)
This very important archaeological site, which encompasses the area between the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Bellona, has been restored and fitted with new information points. The courtyard and portico of the building now houses ancient stones that used to be located, just like the Theatre of Marcellus, in the southern section of the so-called Circus Flaminius. The view from the terrace is particularly memorable given that it offers a glimpse of what ancient Rome used to look like.
