An opportunity to visit the many historic palazzi that Italy's banks
are located in. Normally they are closed to the public because they
contain working offices. Now in its fourth year the event foresees the
opening of more than a hundred palazzi in sixty cities around Italy.
Visitors will be able to see ancient Roman remains, Renaissance buildings,
neo-classical elements and contemporary architectural constructions.

Until 2 Oct: Fernando Botero. Gli ultimi 15 anni (Fernando
Botero. The last fifteen years)
At least 170 previously unseen works. The pulsating heart of the exhibition
is the series of 50 paintings denouncing the horrors that took place
at Abu Ghraib: in them prisoners are piled on top of one another, tied
up, gagged and beaten. The large sections of colour and Botero’s
typically ample proportions once again are a shout of indignation at
social scandal, similar to his outcry in the 90s regarding the bloody
events afoot at the time in his native Colombia. Tue-sun h10-19. €8,

Until 16 Oct: Leon Battista Alberti a Roma. Umanisti e architetti alla
scoperta dell'antico nel Quattrocento (Leon Battista Alberti
in Rome. Humanists and architects discovering antiquity in the 1400s)
Leon Battista Alberti was a great architect, a writer in Latin and the
popular language of the time, a scholar, the elaborator of mathematical
perspective and an art theorist. Using ancient art as his starting point,
he developed the theory that beautry is harmony and can be expressed
mathematically between its whole and its parts: the "proportionality"
of Roman buildings is at the base of architectural design. The exhibition
contains ancient architectural pieces alongside drawings and journals
of the time all bearing witness to his relationship with Rome.

Titian and the past, he allowed himself to be seduced by women and nature,
transforming these elements into the main protagonists of his creations.
His work marked a clear break with the previous pictorial tradition.

Fragments 2005)
Pomodoro is an incredibly strong and creative sculptor who imbues his
work with the ancestral nature of the primitive and the spirit of contemporary
man: aside from the chronological distance, the final result is perfectly
blended. Extremely plastic and material creations are displayed that
render man evidently, extracting from his complexity elements of the
"most distant" past and the "most present" here
and now. Mon-fri h15-19; sat by appointment

Until 16 Oct: La Satira Restaurata. Disegni del 1848 per il Don Pirlone
(Satire restored. Drawings made in 1848 for the Don Pirlone)
At this time numerous humoristic and satirical newspapers were launched,
and in Rome the "Don Pirlone" appeared: a single page publication
that contained hard-hitting articles on national and local affairs,
illustrated by large and coloured lithographical tables painted in watercolours
or ink. 50 never-before-seen preparatory sketches are on show: each
one is a small and biting story, each one provides a key to interpreting
the events of the moment. Ironic moments depict celebrity figures such
as the Tsar Nicholas, Radeschi and Carlo Alberto, and view them with
a gaze that verges on the grotesque. h9,30-17,30. Free entrance

by their everyday existence, restless and agitated by their malaise

Until 21 Oct: Soltanto un quadro al massimo: Domenico Bianchi - Sean
Scully (Maximum one painting: Domenico Bianchi - Sean Scully)
One work, two artists: the exhibition that compares two different ways
of creating art is in its fifth year. Domenico Bianchi's work 'Senza
titolo' (Untitled) is made out of oil and wax on glass fibre. His creations,
populated by geometric signs and forms, are made of wax, wood and metal,
making the final effect full-bodied and substantial, similar to renaissance
inlays. Bianchi's antagonist - strictly for this occasion of course
- is Sean Scully, who presents the piece, 'Wall of Light Dusk'. Juxtaposed
strips of colour, intensity of light and warm tones: these are Scully's
distinctive traits, he is an artist who straddles the European and American
spiritual traditions. Mon-thu h9-13 and h14-17; fri h9-13

Paintings realised on the ground and out in the open air by the inhabitants
of three small villages in Mali. Acrylic colours trace on different
pieces of paper and fabric the stories of the French poet Yves Bergeret,
who garners all his creative energy from his life in Africa. The painter-farmers
translate the author's metaphors into his language, made up of ideograms,
stylised figures, and strips of colour. These works of art represent
a real dialogue between the North and South of the world, a meeting
of cultures, a respect for diversity, and also a source of funding for
the development of small African villages. Tue-sun h9-19,30. €4,

From 2 Oct to 22 Jan 2006: Degas. La famiglia Bellelli Degas. The
Bellelli family
The most famous work from Degas' youth is exhibited for the first time
at the Modern Art Gallery. The truly revolutionary aspect of the painting
is the dysfunctional non-unity of the family, the psychological elements
of the picture take centre-stage and the tension in the family is palpable.
The virtuosity of the mirror is also remarkable. This painting contains
all the power of the Impressionist movement, showing how it shook up
the aesthetic canons from within, allowing a flood of emotion, until
then censored, to enter the realm of art. Tue-sun h9-19,30
