This fascinating archaeological exhibition tells the story of an essential component of Roman culture: the theatre. The exhibition opens with about 70 works that explore the complex origins of theatre: its Greek and Italic roots, the Etruscan contribution to its evolution, the performances that evolved out of Magna Grecia. Another section is centred on the structure of theatres and on set design, both aspects that, with time, evolved their own style. The last part of the exhibition is extremely effective and composed of an overview of the protagonists of the theatrical experience: the actors –their miming techniques and dramatic abilities – and the public, passionate about this form of art made up of music, dance, singing and acting... Paul Gauguin was a symbolist deeply struck by the work of Cézanne and Pissarro and was obsessed by the idea of pure and untamed painting and by a quest to merge both art and life. Paul Gauguin was rejected by France and considered subversive, he spoke using colour, clear contours and rarefied atmospheres. He allowed his primitive and mythical characters to inhabit a literary Eden, possibly in a quest to locate the Peru of his infancy... Paul Gauguin will sate our hunger for beauty. The exhibition includes about 70 works of art, divided according to the phases of the artist's poetic development: it includes small plaster paintings, the so-called "Multiforms" canvases (filled with stains of colour), the large canvases (among which "Mural" stands out), the square shapes of the "Blackform" paintings and the late "black and gray" works. Rothko was Russian by birth but American by adoption and maintained himself through teaching until the critics and art world took notice of him. The second act in the "10 Great Exhibitions" series celebrates Antonio Canova 250 years after the date of his birth. Nicknamed the new Phidias, Canova represents the apotheosis of Italian neoclassicism, an artistic period in which mythological subjects, political personalities and metaphysical themes were explored. The Galleria Borghese will serve as the venue in which to admire over 50 paintings, drawings and clay models. 16 major marble sculptures are also on display and include some spectacular pieces, such as the "Three Graces", the "Sleeping Nymph", "Amor and Psyche", the “Naiad” and the complete series of “Amorini”. Walter Guadagnini is the curator of the biggest exhibition to date dedicated to Pop Art, a cultural and artistic movement that represented the West through unforgettable images such as the Marilyn silk-screens by Andy Warhol and the Coca Cola logo. The show is divided into four sections: the first is dedicated to the object as merchandise, its essence rendered and summarised in the logo; the second section focuses on the stars and personalities of the time, such as astronauts Joe Tilson and Derek Boshier; the third section is dedicated to communication channels and forms of expression of popular culture such as the cartoon; the fourth is about sex and the body as an erotic entity. Pop art is art that collides – inevitably – with mass media; it offers a document of society and of the spirit that pervaded the era.

A show of 20 oil paintings and drawings by a great Sicilian artist who lived in Rome, became a senator and died in 1987, in other words, Renato Guttuso. The exhibition is representative of the artistic journey undertaken by Guttuso between the 1940s and the 1980s. Works such as "Contadina", "Pescatori di Sicilia", "La strada", "La spiaggia" relate what the society of the time and its protagonists were all about. Guttuso - who was inspired by Picasso - finally landed on a realistic style that was stripped down to its essence and located completeness and meaning in style and form. Susan Crile's canvases say a lot more than the myriad words and explanations expounded about the torture inflicted by US soldiers on Iraqi prisoners. The artist is faithful to the reportage style of the photos that made their way around the world. But then she subverts it. Crile begins with simple representation but then reaches incredible heights by managing to confer humanity on episodes that are devoid of humanity; episodes that are beastly and mind-boggling. All the charm and immediacy of cartoons is explored in this exhibition. The Casa della Memoria e della Storia (House of Memory and History) pays a great deal of attention to new media and artistic languages in the knowledge that they are an efficient and effective tool with which to describe history. "Gina cammina" shows 50 cartoons by refined cartoonist Antonella Toffolo. Toffolo uses a technique called scratchboard, in which she scrapes away black ink from a white surface, simulating the strong contrasts of a wood engraving. Admission free

In celebration of the 134 years of existence of the Rome Province this exhibition highlights the value of the artistic, archaeological and cultural heritage of the provinces. A total of 122 works or, given their importance one should say 122 gems - one for each municipality – are on display. Particularly worth pointing out is the Pietro da Cortona from Torrita Tiberina, the "Crowning with Thorns" from Montecompatri, the "Mosaic" from Anzio and the fragment of opus sectile on loan from the Museo delle Navi Romane in Nemi. Three artists with very different backgrounds and sensibilities, Mochetti, Pistoletto and Sandison are nevertheless united by their choice to create works using electrical or technological equipment. Maurizio Mochetti presents “Sfera Avional”, an installation in continuous movement conceived to depict a fluid idea of space. Michelangelo Pistoletto, one of the most emblematic artists of the Arte Povera movement, shows “Quadro di fili elettrici”: a triumph of minimalism composed of electric wires and lightbulbs. The third piece, "Collapse-Construct", is by Scotsman Charles Sandison and consists of anthropomorphised numbers organised in complex systems that generate ever-differing orders. Tue-sun h11-19

Gerardo Parrinello came up with the concept of this exhibition dedicated to string instruments. The exhibition is laid out in two sections: the first is dedicated to the "Roman instruments of the 17th century” and the second to the "Instruments created by contemporary violin-makers who produce copies of instruments from the 16th to 19th centuries". The aim of the exhibition is to bring these instruments that are usually only known by professionals and niche fans to a wider audience. A series of concerts, conferences and other initiatives will take place contemporaneously with the show to enhance the public's knowledge of the world of string instruments even further. The sculptures of one of the most representative artists of the informal period - Francesco Somaini - are on display. After a tentative foray into the world of cubism, the Como-born artist found his own highly atmospheric, symbolic and forceful language. Awarded and appreciated by the critics, Somaini gives life to works made out of metal, lead and bronze in which the material appears to be moulded and modelled by his will. Mario Ceroli is one of arte povera's predecessors, a great sculptor who is extremely versatile and talented at working with the most diverse materials. The newly revamped and reopened Palazzo delle Esposizioni space hosts a show that explores Ceroli's wooden series of cut-out silhouettes. His stupendous creations are made out of wood, glass, clay, sand, ash, but also wool, copper sulphate and lead oxide. One piece is particularly worth pointing out: the bright, colourful installation of wooden silhouettes in the central hall.

Closing the trilogy started by the "Papi in Posa" and "La Porpora romana" exhibitions dedicated to the figures of cardinals and popes, is a new show dedicated to the aristocratic portrait. These 17th and 18th century portraits prove that the genre has many highly identifiable elements: portraiture in fact has a celebratory and political function and aims to represent people in their social roles and present the power held by the person depicted.

The exhibition is an entirely audio event: the exhibition is made up of nine different musical programmes (the soundtrack is a selection of tracks by the artists represented). Another gem of the "Sipario Sonoro" event are the i-pods placed at the disposal of the public, who can use them for up to 360 minutes as they walk around in the beautiful setting of Doria Pamphilj park. h10-17. The Pincio hydrochronometer was made in 1873 out of wood and cast iron. The clock was created by the brilliant Father Giovan Battista Embriaco, and after achieving great success at the National Exhibition in Paris it was brought to Rome and placed in a splendid fountain in the Villa Borghese park. The clock has been restored and is now on view.

A show dedicated to one of the major exponents of the "Nuova Scuola Romana", Giuseppe Callo is originally from the Cosentino region but is now living and working in the capital. Khebrehzadeh was born in Tehran at the end of the 1970s and was trained as a painter at the Academy of Rome. She now lives between Washington and Italy. The MACRO has put on an exhibition in which we can admire many paintings made out of wood and plaster but also two very particular creations: video-animations projected on mega-drawings composed of resin, olive oil, ink and cartoons. The sweet music of the videos amalgamates with the delicateness of the drawings, and effectively recreates the atmosphere of the traditional fairytales Khebrehzadeh was told during her childhood...

A major chronological retrospective dedicated to the highly original Venetian artist, Emilio Vedova. The exhibition opens with the drawings that mark Vedova's beginnings - back in the 1930s - and continues with his first forays into the world of painting, inspired by the works of Tintoretto, Rembrandt, and baroque and expressionist artists. The later creations (dating from the 1950s) were born out of a more mature artistry; this is when the geometric element of his work came to light. The "Plurimi" series, that expressed a consciousness of the drama of daily existence, are also very famous, as are the colourful works dating from the 80s, the "Dischi" and "Bozzetti". 21 paintings, ten drawings, one marble sculpture, a bust of Costanza Bonarelli from the Museo del Bargello, a massive cartoon and some canvases by Bernini have gone on show at the Palazzo Barberini. The exhibition is laid out in the following sequence: self-portraits, portraits and sacred paintings. A further thematic subdivision centres on the nature of the artist's pictorial portraiture, or his delicate relationship with his patrons. Palazzo Barberini is once again hosting temporary artistic events and its launch show celebrates the architect who designed the spaces of Palazzo Barberini, bringing to light his pictorial talents.

The title of this show is inspired by an early 20th century work by Umberto Boccioni, one of the most important exponents of Futurism. This is a show of over 100 works dedicated to the Macchiaioli - a group of 19th-century Florentine and Neopolitan painters who reacted against the rule-bound Italian academies of art and looked to nature for instruction. The Macchiaioli felt that patches (Italian: macchia) of colour were the most significant aspect of painting and the only means man had of entering into contact with reality. An absolutely new museum space and the result of a sophisticated restoration programme aimed at recovering the original aspect of the buildings and the expansion of external pathways. Some statistics for the museum: it is 2000sqm in size, contains 172 marble fragments and 15 models. Innovation and tradition come perfectly together in this venue, which increases the visitor’s appreciation of the role of colour in the ancient site, and looks at the relationship between architecture and sculpture.
