Fosco Maraini is a mountaineer, globetrotter, storyteller, ethnologist and – as this exhibition goes a long way in showing – a photographer too. The Swiss Institute hosts a series of photographs taken by Maraini in 1954 on the island of Hekura. This reportage documents the life of the Ama tribe (now totally assimilated into the Japanese population): their village, rituals, customs, but above all the women of their tribe and their daily activities. Maraini’s lens captured the women’s everyday lives, the way they fished naked to a depth of about 20m to get hold of shellfish called ‘awabis’, the tribe’s main source of food. The first photographic and ethnographic reportage ever shows us life as it is lived in contact with nature. An enchanting experience. Mon-sat h11-13 and h15-19. Admission free
