Until 22 Jan 2006: Degas. La famiglia Bellelli (Degas. The Bellelli family)
The most famous work from Degas' youth is exhibited for the first time at the Modern Art Gallery. The truly revolutionary aspect of the painting is the dysfunctional non-unity of the family, the psychological elements of the picture take centre-stage and the tension in the family is palpable. The virtuosity of the mirror is also remarkable. This painting contains all the power of the Impressionist movement, showing how it shook up the aesthetic canons from within, allowing a flood of emotion, until then censored, to enter the realm of art.
