Until 18 Apr: I colori del fasto. La domus del Gianicolo e i suoi marmi (The splendid colours and marbles of the domus on the Janiculum hill)
For the first time ever some of the archaeological finds from the Imperial Domus that was discovered and excavated on the Janiculum Hill (when an access ramp to an underground parking was built in the run-up to the Jubilee celebrations in 2000) are on display. According to ancient sources, the private residences of the imperial family, and in particular, Agrippina the Elder's (14 BC - 33 AD) extensive gardens complex, were located in this area.

From 4 to 23 Apr: Il Salone di Maggio. Segnali di primavera ((The May Salon. Hints of Spring)
An exhibition of almost 40 oil and acrylic paintings and sculptures created by famous artists working in the 1900s in Italy and contemporary artists working in Italy and abroad. The result is a very varied collection showcasing different media and techniques (paintings, watercolours, tapestries, sculptures, pastels, polyurethane artworks) and different artists (De Pisis, Prampolini, Gentilini, Padovan and Gruccione).

From 15 Mar to 11 Jun: Giulio Aristide Sartorio
107 oils and temperas, 38 charcoals and other drawings, 9 draft plans for large-scale works, 40 photos (that have never seen before) by the painter and a film, "Il Mistero di Galatea" (The mystery of Galatea) shot by the artist, form the nucleus of this retrospective dedicated to Giulio Aristide Sartorio. Until 20 Jun: Modigliani
Drawings, oil paintings and watercolours by the great Modigliani will go on show in Rome. This Tuscan painter from Livorno lived out his brief but intense and passionate career between Montmartre and Montparnasse in Paris and died aged only 36. This retrospective offers us a view of the artist's development and shows us his chronological evolution. He was enamoured of portraits and did them of friends and, above all, of women. Many of these fell in love with him after he represented them on canvas with sensual soft lines and that emblematic long and refined neck. €9, reduced €6,50

An exhibition that aims to do justice to the vast output of a 15th century artist who is simply not well known enough. Antonello da Messina started his career in the small workshop owned by his family and then arrived in Venice. Until 30 Jul: Guardia Svizzera Pontificia (The Papal Swiss Guard)
One of the initiatives celebrating 500 years since the arrival of the Papal Swiss Guard in Rome, this exhibition examines the guards and their role within the Vatican in detail. A series of objects, photos and footage are on display and illustrate the development this institution has had from the 16th century to the present day.

The muses are a source of inspiration and creative fount in every field of knowledge, from music to poetry, from philosophy to art. In Greek mythology they are imagined as the beautiful daughters of Zeus: Calliope, Erato, Terpsichore, Clio, Thalia, Urania. They will be brought to life in the Amphitheatre of Flavius, which will exhibit bas-reliefs, frescoes, mosaics, statues, portraits and marble sarcophaguses. €4. h8,30-19,15

This exhibition celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Constituent Assembly. In the very rooms where the Assembly met, a series of documents, original film footage and audio recordings show the historic events of the period and tell of the deliberations that led to the drafting of the Constitution after the Liberation and the elections of 2 June 1946. Decorated with the International Grand Prize for Sculpture, Umberto Mastroianni has been an extremely productive artist who has constantly evolved in his work. At the beginning of his career Mastroianni's works were small and slight, later they found their inspiration in geometric shapes, and after that, during his 'informal period', they became filled with pain and lacerations. Longaretti's background as an artist was extremely rich and varied. He studied architecture at university and was soon collecting awards and exhibiting together with other artists. This exhibition at Castel Sant'Angelo comprises forty paintings by the artist in which landscapes and still-lifes show man at his most delicate and fragile, in situations that vary from poverty to exclusion. An anthology examining the major phases of the career of northern Italian artist Mirando Haz, from the 1960s to the present day. Haz is famous for the thousands of etchings created in copper and zinc, and his pictorial representations of many important figures in the fields of art and culture, from Garcia Lorca to Marcel Proust, from Thomas Mann to Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli. Haz is an artist much appreciated by critics and the winner of many awards.

Approximately sixty drawings and watercolours have been made available for this show by the Hungarian museum of Kecskemét and private collections. An installation created by the Atelier del Bosco, it comprises two large works by acclaimed painter and sculptor of the Italian transavanguard movement Enzo Cucchi, and an extensive series of drawings of smaller sizes by the artist. The courtyard of the Aranci and the Sala degli Arazzi host the work of renowned artist from Friuli, Mascherini. In the 1950s and 60s the artist worked on the three famous Italian superliners - Augustus, Leonardo Da Vinci and Raffaello - which are currently preserved in the Complesso di San Michele. Mascherini's creations are conceived out of the union between art and technology, and were exhibited in the restaurants and drawing rooms of the boats. Lun-sab h10-18. Admission free

On the centenary of his birth the spotlight is on the figure and many personalities of Carlo Mollino, an eclectic, histrionic and unstoppable individual who was always evolving. The multi-faceted architect is commemorated in this exhibition that is laid out in five container structures according to a winding route in perfect Mollini-like style. Two artists, two exhibitions, one single concept: spirituality in art. Some 26 paintings and pastels by Clemente are on show. They display his resolute style and his Indian or Christian inspirations. One of the most unique and fascinating Italian painters of the 19th Century, Ippolito Caffi - a strong and restless personality, and adventurous spirit, a convinced patriot and fascinating romantic figure - is the protagonist of one of the most important exhibitions in Italy this Spring. A tireless traveller, Caffi created works that allow spectators to admire the most important Italian and European cities and immerse themselves in the Eastern atmospheres of the late 1800s through views of Athens, Jerusalem, Constantinople, Cairo, and many other cities. Until 7 May: Erlich and Dessì
Dessì is one of the more notable figures of contemporary abstractionism. His creations blend luminous effects and the use of strong substances and materials such as bitumen and tar. They also play with colour in such a way as to create symbols that must be decoded in order to encode reality according to a new perspective. Erlich has created a series of very striking installations for MACRO, such as the piece called 'Doors', made up of a sequence of four rooms. The rooms are dark but the light that one can see under the door of each one gives the illusion of lighting and illumination. Another piece called 'Batiment' was shown at the Nuit Blanche event in Paris in 2004 and gives onlookers the impression of climbing up a building. Tue-sat h9-19; sun h9-14. €1

200 drawings created by the painter-soldier Vito Lombardi after the armistice of 3 November 1918 are on show. Drawings made with charcoal, ink and pens interpret the Piave front that was about to be dismantled: different drawings that speak volumes about the aftermath of war, showing us the scars of its devastation. h9,30-17,30. The symbol of faith and of Christian iconography, the Cross: since the Edict of Constantine it has been reproduced on urns, sarcophaguses, insignia and banners, many churches mimic its shape and it is one of the most often represented artistic subjects. Ervin Wurm is all about conceptual art that is ironic, dynamic, soft and textured at the same time: sculptures that move, 'plump' forms halfway between inspiration and the finished form, the creations of the artist who merges techniques and barriers that traditionally are a mix between photography, video and performances or events. Wurm's inspiration comes from everyday objects such as bicycles, brooms, vegetables, balls and chairs. Tue-sat h9-19; sun h9-14. €1

An exhibition made up of thirty panels that narrate the Bonaparte years 1829-1830. The so-called "battle of the Three Emperors" finds form and image in a panoramic papier-peint that is being shown to the public for the first time.

From 30 Mar to 11 Jun: L'artista e il suo atelier. Una raccolta di 3128 disegni all'Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica (The artist and his studio. A collection of 3,128 drawings at the National Institute for Graphic Arts)
About a hundred drawings dating from between the Renaissance and last century have been selected from the over 3,000 drawings owned by Milanese family Osio and bought by the Institute. This exhibition of drawings offers an overview of the different Italian schools of graphic arts, from the Lombard, Veneto and Emilia Romagna schools to the Tuscan, Roman and Neapolitan schools. €5, reduced €3

The beautiful Sala degli Oriazi e Curiazi hosts more than a hundred pieces from the 19th century collection of Marquis Giovanni Pietro Campana di Cavelli.
