For seven days Romans and visitors can visit the artistic sites and treasures (architecture, painting, sculpture) of Italy for free. The event is called Cultural Heritage Week and last year it included 1,500 events. In 2006 it will offer the opportunity to visit newly restored sites and enjoy varied cultural initiatives such as concerts, performances and other events. Free entrance www

From 4 Apr to 30 May: FotoGrafia Festival
The fifth edition of this international Photography Exhibition, and all its related events, is dedicated to a reinterpretation of the 1900s (identity, war, landscape, post-modernism and light) and to ascribing a popular role to photography. FotoGrafia festival has shown more than 600 artists to date and over 80,000 visitors have visited its events. Artistic director: Marco Delogu. www

From 7 to 14 Apr: RIFF - Rome Indipendent Film Festival
The fifth edition of the Roma Independent Film Festival, an international competitive event for independent film-makers. These are the different sections in competition: Feature Films; New Frontiers (first and second works); Documentary Films (on a range of issues and on human rights); Short Films; Digital Video; International Student Films (for film school students); Animation; Screenplays & Subjects. A newcomer in the 2006 edition is the Music Shorts section (featuring the music of Ennio Morricone, Goblin and Keith Emerson). The winners will be chosen by an international jury of experts in various fields relating to cinema. Artistic director: Fabrizio Ferrari. www

The monumental appeal of the Palazzo del Campidoglio, the beauty of its gardens, the new location ascribed to the statue of Marcus Aurelius: finally there will be a chance to enjoy all this. The complex that Rome Mayor Veltroni defines "the house of all Romans" will open its doors to the public on a series of Sundays: 12 and 19 February for tourists, 5 and 19 March for senior citizens, and 2 and 23 April for children. h9-13.
